A Day in the Life at Building Hope

Last month, Doug, our Executive Director, stepped into the shoes of Toni for a few days. Toni is Building Hope's Manager-Extraordinaire, someone we know we could not do without for her tireless work and heart for the people who join us for food, clothing, and community.

In Doug's words -

"Last week, I helped out at Building Hope and see how things run day-to-day. I’ve been part of the Wednesday food run with Lenny for over a year now, but this was my first time being there for three full days. Here's a glimpse of how things go.

"We arrive around 8:25, having picked up a flat of day-old products from #TimHorton’s nearby. Despite our 9:00 opening, several people are already there, most of whom have likely spent the night outside. They often just rest with their heads down, waiting for breakfast. We make a huge pot of oatmeal and boil about 60 eggs to start, with toast and condiments available for them to use themselves. By 8:50, we’re serving breakfast, which keeps us busy until well past 11:00. Sometimes, we need to make extra oatmeal and eggs to meet the demand.

"While breakfast is served, lunch is prepped and starts at noon. Instead of having people line up, we serve them at their tables to avoid any tension in the queue. After everyone seated is served, others can come to the kitchen for their plates. Some prefer to take their lunch outside to eat.

There’s a brief lull in the early afternoon, but by 2:00, another wave of people shows up. We’ve often run out of prepared lunch, so we rely on sandwiches or heat-up #Starbucks sandwiches I sometimes bring from Southside Church of the Nazarene. Just yesterday, I was microwaving sandwiches non-stop until almost 3:00!"

That is quite the day! If you'd like to join us as a volunteer or donor, don't hesitate to complete the contact form and we will get in contact!
